FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
First impressions count, take note of your ‘gut feeling’, does it have a friendly
atmosphere?
Is the location of the facility in close proximity to family, friends, clubs or groups?
Ask questions, as you tour, observe, the layout, the lounge areas, are there notice
boards for the residents and relatives?
Talk to residents at the complex – ask them how they enjoy it. Ask them to rate it
(1—10), 1 = poor 10 = excellent.
We recommend that you visit 2 or more facilities, to give you an overview of what
residential aged care accommodation offers.
Questions to ask:
- Can my relative bring their own furnishings/furniture?
- What are the meal times?
- Where do they have meals?
- Ask to see a menu, and
observe range and choice.
- Are there outdoor areas?
- What is the arrangement for laundry of clothes?
- How available is the telephone?
- What is offered for recreation and outings. You may be able to observe the
recreation programme.
- Are there other health professionals on staff eg: physiotherapists,
occupational
therapist services? How are they referred?
- Are podiatry services provided, and what is the cost for this service?
- What is the staff ratio? Check if that is clinical staff or all staff ratio.
- Are registered nurses on duty, and for how many hours?
- Are there any rules?
- What information is provided to relatives when a person is in care?
- Has the complex had any Health and disability complaints in the past 2 years?
