HISTORY OF AROHA CARE CENTRE

Beginnings – The History of Aroha. The start of the vision

Nearly forty years ago, the Wellington Baptist churches had the vision to build a facility for older adults in the Lower Hutt community. Planning took some time for those associated with the project and in 1970 the Wellington Presbyterian Social Services Association offered to assist and as a result the two Associations formed a unique joint and equal partnership which ensured the vision was realised. Thus began a partnership between two Christian groups, which has existed harmoniously throughout the years.  The Rest Home was opened in June 1974.

With the passing of time the need for a Hospital became apparent and additional land was purchased for that purpose.  The Hospital was opened on 3 May, 1980. Just three years later villas were added to the property, providing accommodation for those living independently.

Aroha Care Centre is well known for it’s high standard of care and has undertaken voluntary Accreditation with the Quality Health New Zealand from 1991 – 2004 and has  Ministry of Health three year Certification. Aroha received a Tertiary level achievement through ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices for the maximum time of two years.

Aroha has been established and maintained through the effort and goodwill of many fine Christian people.  The complex stands today as a tribute to this tradition of Christian endeavour and concern. The Trust Board is committed to care of the Elderly and meets regularly to review its strategic position and to look towards future planning.
